Paramedic Science

Paramedic Working

Paramedics respond to emergency calls and are often one of the first health care professionals to arrive at the scene of an emergency. They provide advanced life support to the sick and injured, and transport patients to medical facilities. The Paramedic Science program builds upon existing certificate programs in Basic or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician to provide students.

THE PROGRAM

The Paramedic Science program will build upon existing certificate programs in Basic or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician to provide students with a career pathway in the field of Emergency Medical Services. The graduate will be competent in Paramedic Science, meeting competency in the Didactic (knowledge), Psychomotor (skills level), and Affective (behavior) domains. The program requires 43 credit hours of coursework that can be completed over the course of a year, providing students with the opportunity to quickly earn highly sought skills and credentials that can lead to gainful employment in the EMS sector. The program offers students the opportunity to perform clinical rotations with several hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical service providers.

Program Requirements

Students must:
• be at least 18 years of age by the application deadline and provide a copy of birth certificate.
• meet all requirements of the Arkansas Department of Health, Section of Emergency Services.
• complete all ASU Mid-South enrollment requirements and submit all documents to the Office of Admissions.
• have an EMT certification or license from state of residence.
•have an Arkansas certification of basic or advanced EMT prior to Paramedic Practicum I.
•complete a physical exam documenting good physical and mental health.
•submit to a substance abuse screening and criminal background check during the first week of class.
•complete and submit proof of a negative tuberculosis (TB) skin test prior to clinical training.
•complete and obtain an acceptable score of 2 or better from an interview by a selection committee.
•pass the Paramedic entrance exam with a 77 percent or greater.
•be accepted into the program*

*Even if admission requirements are met, not all applicants may be immediately accepted for admission due to program enrollment limits.
