The TRiO Student Support Services Academic Coach will report to the Director of Student Support Services and participates in a number of support services.
Duties and Responsibilities
The TRIO SSS Academic Coach plays a vital role in the recruitment, identification, recommendation, and enrollment of eligible students into the program. The coach provides comprehensive academic, career, and life skills coaching through a case-management approach, ensuring that each student receives personalized support. This position is responsible for monitoring students’ academic progress and connecting them with appropriate support services as needed. The Academic Coach promotes student retention by assisting participants in setting achievable goals, facilitating self-improvement workshops, and offering career planning guidance. Additionally, the coach supports students in selecting and completing admissions-related documentation, including financial aid forms, required for transfer to four-year institutions. Academic Coaches are also responsible for maintaining accurate, up-to-date program files and ensuring all documentation aligns with federal regulations and institutional policies. This position requires flexibility, including some evening hours, several overnight stays for conferences, and occasional weekend hours during special events.
The TRIO SSS Academic Coach is responsible:
- Recruit, identify, and enroll 180 eligible participants into the TRIO SSS program each grant year.
- Conduct intake and complete all required documentation (IEP, application, acceptance agreement, evaluations) within four weeks of participant enrollment.
- Provide consistent, one-on-one academic, personal, transfer, career, and financial literacy coaching.
- Monitor academic progress and connect students with appropriate resources to ensure continued success.
- Assist students in completing admissions, transfer, and financial aid paperwork for four-year institutions.
- Plan, deliver, and assess workshops on academic success, financial literacy, disability services, life skills, and career readiness in collaboration with campus departments.
- Communicate regularly with faculty, staff, and external agencies to ensure students are receiving the support and information they need.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in accordance with federal and institutional compliance requirements.
- Participate in TRIO events, conferences, and activities, which may include evening and weekend hours, as well as occasional overnight travel.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, sociology or related field with preference given to candidates who hold a master’s degree. Prior experience in college student services, particularly in working with under-prepared adult learners, or individuals requiring additional support to achieve their educational goals, is strongly preferred. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email. Additionally, excellent oral and written communication skills are required for success in this role.
